To figure any ratio, put the transmission in whatever gear you're checking, and turn the input shaft 10 times. Count the turns the output shaft makes and do a little math. The Muncie 4 speeds we used in the dirt trackers had either a 1.88 or a 2.20 ratio second gear, and we preferred to use the 2.20 type. Against a 4.11 rear end, we had a final drive ratio of 9.04:1 on a 1/4 mile dirt oval. That was just right for launching off the turns at around 3K RPM and hitting 7K by the end of the (very short) straightaway. Do that twice a lap for a thousand laps or so, and it was time to freshen up the engine by about mid-season.
