Does anybody else remember the Chevy Vega 4 cylinder engine- - - -the one that had aluminum pistons plated with cast iron running against an acid-etched high-silicon aluminum cylinder wall? There was no way to replace a piston in a scored cylinder, so GM said a damaged block had to be scrapped. I made a good chunk of pocket change back then, boring and honing those blocks for flanged sleeves, and fitting conventional aluminum pistons to them. After a couple of disastrous years of production, GM started putting cast iron sleeves and aluminum pistons into factory blocks.
