is that the slant back model? I have the later model here and definitely you can remove the bezel without opening the case.
The screws that hold the bezel are mounted in tapped holes, no nuts involved.
One thing I would like to mention. The new dial that I have purchased has the thin plastic film on the lense and the end continues over one end. I think there is an identifying mark on the extra. The first time I saw this I thought it was a protective cover. As I proceeded to pull it off I found out that it was the dial!
