I understand the design just not the reason behind it. Totally unacceptable for a mechanic to work on. Glad I didn't have to make a living back then turning wrenches.
Not much different today though. Instead of using a cable to adjust heater controls let's hook up an electric motor hooked to a computer and buried in the dash!!
Engineers have not gotten any smarter. Just my opinion
