Some folks don't use the side mounts. Your idea is correct, use the exisiting side mount holes. Fab a bracket over to the frame. Fairly simple standard fab effort.
The general procedure is mount it all up and bolt Tcase to crossmember. To design a side bracket: Use angle, plate, rectangular tubing or what you think is best. Bolt one piece to the Tcase, the other to the frame. Bolt or tack weld them togeter. Take to bench and perfect the design. (or make a cardboard model). A gusset or two will be good to add. Try to copy an original bracket somewhat.

You already know this but a NP205 is the "coupe de gas". 1980 was last year for 205 with automatic. IIRC.
