It was not uncommon to get the gear clocked a tooth or more late, and have to rotate the housing to an oddball position to set the timing correctly. On the early Chevy V8s that could cut off oil flow to the hydraulic valve lifters on one cylinder bank, since the distributor housing had a flat spot that had to line up with the oil gallery for that side. If the plug wires and dizzy housing were clocked incorrectly, the oil gallery for the passenger's side could get restricted. Later models got a full groove around the housing instead of the milled area.
