I’m with drag6 and 52 Carl, my ‘49 216 had exact same symptoms soon after I brought it home. After trying everything you did, discovered a dead spider, and a tiny leaf hanging around the pipe at the bottom of the tank. Car would idle all day but couldn’t get a mile without shutting down, would restart after a bit but rinse and repeat. Cleaned the tank and that problem went away. I removed the sending unit which gave a clear view of the bottom of the tank – didn’t think a small partial blockage would impact that much but it did.
