A lot of the above drama can be sidestepped by acquiring a carbotundum button hone a few thousandths larger than the transmission input shaft snout, and using a variable speed drill motor to fit the bushing ID to the shaft. Since the only time there is relative motion between the bushing and the input shaft is during shifting, or maybe idling in gear with the clutch pedal depressed at a stoplight, the fit isn't terribly critical.
