Here is a screenshot taken from the 1929-54 Chevy Master Parts Listing that shows a good black and white engine pic that includes the standard "oil bath" style air cleaner assembly most often found on 216's and 235's.
The air filter in Otto's reply as he noted was originally an oil impregnated cleanable and reusable mesh style (before being converted to a replaceable paper element).
