X2 on what 46Sparky said on engine replacements not being stamped.
My '51's original 216 was replaced in early '54 with an engine that was not stamped. I even tried an acid etch to see if the serial number had possibly been machined off, but no evidence of that. They documented the engine swap with a brass plate screwed to the valve cover.
