Looking back at my pictures, I think I plug welded there. I do have a spot welder, but don't recall using it on the doors.
Good plan on doing the outer panel first. Gives you better access for planishing the weld dots at the joint. That access hole is pretty small. I nearly got my arm stuck in there when I was installing sound deadener on the outer panel of my doors.
