People weren't fat slobs in the 1930s and '40s and they were slightly shorter. The average army recruit in 1943 was about 5' 7" and weighed 151 lbs.

Even in 1955 men in their 20s weighed between 156 and 172 lbs and ranged in height from 5'5'' to 6'1". So even a "big" man in 1955 only weighed 172lbs.
