The current regulator is there to prevent the generator from damaging itself from overcurrent while recharging a dead, or severely low battery. It would require several hundred miles of driving without restarting the engine, but there's no reason a good condition generator/regulator system would not be able to bring a dead battery back up to full charge. That disclaimer is only there to give the manufacturer an out in case their barely-adequate materials and production processes happen to fail under load. There are plenty of real Delco-Remy regulators out there that are either still functional, or can be cleaned up and adjusted to OEM specifications.
