My knowledge of diesels is almost nil. I can understand what would be gained with a 10 speed gearbox, but going from a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder dosen't seem to make sense. Would there be that much torque gained with a diesel coupled to a 10 speed to offset the loss of 2 cylinders? It would seem that a 6 cylinder diesel would be a better choice for a big bolt.
Except for small cars and trucks (and my little Kubota tractor) my experience has been that 4 cylinder engines are usually underpowered.
Will this 4 cylinder diesel put out as much or more than the original 6 cylinder?

Don't forget the fact, that I know very little about diesels. So, try and be easy on me. The reason that I am asking, is I was also toying with the idea of someday putting a newer diesel in a big bolt. Although, I was thinking more about a 6 cylinder.
