So you pushed the pedal in order to stop and the car stayed in gear, presumably stalling?
Are you able to shift out of gear or is the lever stuck in position when this happens?
How much pressure is required when you step on the clutch? easy , hard? When the clutch won't disengage does the pedal feel firm, light, same as always?
How new or old are all the cluthc components? throw out bearing pilot bearing, clutch , pressure plate, etc?
A worn throw out bearing is my first suspicion (also known as the clutch release bearing).
