when i bought my '56 truck, it had no hand brakes,either.
HOWEVER, perusing through the assembly manuals, the diagrams show a series of rods and levers, which actuate some sort of emergency brake, near the front u-joint, or the tail-end of the trans.
examine your diagrams very carefully.
since my drivetrain was upgraded, alas, i also have no emergency brakes.
