Ok, so i'm parting out this 1940 GMC 1.5 ton.. and I notice the 4 speed tranny looks an awful lot like the 4 speed tranny in my '46 2 ton.

So given the hassle i've had with my '46 1/2 ton torque tube BS, I got to thinking.. if this next torque tube u-joint deal I just bought ends up going the way of all sinners, why couldn't I stick this "open driveline" 4 speed in the 1/2 ton, and replace the torque tube rear end with a later model, higher geared rear?

Not sure what engine is in the 1.5 ton GMC.. it's a inline 6 for sure, and has a neat old school GMC valve cover, so i'm going to ASSUME that it's a GMC engine.

The question I guess is.. would the 4 speed tranny out of a '40 GMC big bolt 'bolt up' to a 216 in a 1/2 ton?

If not a direct bolt up, what would I have to change? Flywheel? Clutch housing, plate, etc? Were the bell housings on the GMC big trucks different than the Chevy 216's?

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.
