When I put the rear shocks on my bare chassis, I needed to compress the suspension a bit to get them on. They were the recommended stock length shocks.

I don't think it will hurt anything if you let the axle hang on the shocks. You normally won't see full extension when driving unless you're doing a Dukes of Hazard jump. big_eek
