Just guessing- - - - -you've probably got a trans from the late 1920's or early 30's. In the mid-1930's GM launched an advertising campaign for the "silent second gear"- - - -a transmission with constant-mesh helical gears and synchronizers to do the actual shifting rather than sliding straight cut gears in and out of mesh. People were so used to the noisy straight cut 1st. and 2nd. gears that they would drive for miles in second- - - -forgetting to shift to high gear which was direct drive.
