Underneath the grease cup on the side of the distributor is a spring and plunger that runs on the shaft. I believe the idea behind that is to remove play from the shaft to keep the dwell from changing from the shaft bouncing around within the bushing. If the spring is broken, that might explain your erratic dwell. It's also possible that your bushings are excessively worn, but that would be a gradual thing.
