Well thank you gents for your input as well as allowing the GM starter (?) space in the forum.
I'll give the big fat cables a try, clean up any fungus where they attach and see what happens. The 6 volt starter on 12volts sounds interesting, but finding one to fit this application could be a real toughie I'm sure.
