With the dowel pushed in, the two large pipe thread ports MUST be connected, either by a flex hose, some type of hard pipe, or a full flow filter. Pushing the dowel in prevents oil flow from the pump from getting to the engine- - - -it must flow from the lower large port to the upper, either with a plumbed connection joining the two ports or a filter capable of flowing enough oil volume to supply all the engine's lubrication needs.
