If you lost brake lights, those don't go thru the headlight switch or the dimmer switch. The circuit up to the brake light switch should be hot all the time. Work your way upstream from the headlight switch with a test light. Check at each terminal and when you get the test light to light up, your problem is between that terminal and the previous one you tested.
