A trick we used around my Diesel shop was to leave the wheels, tires and hubs all bolted together, and use a piece of oiled sheet metal to slide the whole assembly on and off the axle load tube after jacking the axle up just enough to take the weight off the bearings. It minimizes the muscle strains and pains doing it that way as long as the floor is fairly level.
