A wire brush lightly, then a brass brush then a good ol scrub brush with Murphy's soap then 220 sand paper going with the wood grain. I would then replace the missing wood by a technique called scabbing. I have some oak from my 54' that I could send you. My bed was mint but the dumb guy that said he was storing it (here in Florida), left it outside for 7 years. I would probably go partially celibate for a 46' like your's. Oh I always put boiled linseed oil on my bed every couple of years, it's painted black with quality paint just like the way it came from the factory. Doc
