| Crusing in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 5,096 | Be careful, 540 series trans came with long and short input shafts, new shafts are no longer available, short input shafts are harder to find. They came on IHC, Chevy, GMC, Ford, Dodge, Stude, etc, all with different mounting bolt patterns. Most yards don't know what they are, just need to get in the yard and search for oneself. Al top cover, 4 shift rails quicker sway to ID. Top of Al housing, steel pins shifthandle pivots on, pins get loose in housing-watch for.
Nice close ratio trans. Some available as OD in 5th, however, then large gap in ratios, awkward w/o 2 speed rear.
I put one in an early Bronco, worked really well, much better than the original 3 speed.
