Also, inspect the pinion shaft. Mating surface needs to be smooth. If it is gouged or scored, get a redi-sleeve to go over the shaft.
Lacking a 3/4 or 1" impact wrench, the best way to tighten the pinion nut is to put the rear wheels on the ground (or ramps), put a big pipe wrench with a cheater if needed on the yold so when you tighten the nut the pipe wrench is against the ground. Then you can use a long cheater on the pinion nut wrench.
