If the seal is leaking, check the seal to see if you nicked or cut it putting in the pinion shaft. Also, inspect the pinion shaft. Mating surface needs to be smooth. If it is gouged or scored, get a redi-sleeve to go over the shaft.

Lacking a 3/4 or 1" impact wrench, the best way to tighten the pinion nut is to put the rear wheels on the ground (or ramps), put a big pipe wrench with a cheater if needed on the yold so when you tighten the nut the pipe wrench is against the ground. Then you can use a long cheater on the pinion nut wrench.
