It boggles the mind to know how high tech we were in the 40's and 50's. On old flathead fords we used a plate slightly thicker than the longer studs. It was counterbored so the head nuts would screw down on the studs lower than the top surface. This gave a flat surface for the boring bar without having to pull out 42 or 48 of those #^*$@ studs that always had a few twist off.
