Roll the seal in some clean motor oil, and thin it out by rolling it on a clean, smooth surface like a piece of glass. I've coaxed a seal into place at times by using the wire trick, and once the wire is snaked over the crankshaft, turn the crank while holding onto the end of the wire. Slow and steady- - - - -don't get impatient!
