I've done dozens of them, with about a 75% success rate. There are bunches of "shade tree" tricks the purists here would scoff at, but they worked well to put groceries on the table and pay the rent, and the customer got his vehicle back without a leak most of the time. There's even a way to put the bottom half of a new rope seal in, and tighten the top.
