If you are going to replace the shims with new pieces why not go one step further and replace the spring pins as well, after all if original they are 65 years old. Just my thoughts.
That's a given. Even IF they would come loose without breaking or stripping threads, the old ones would be to short.
I always replace the bolt when separating leaves.
