I had a 46 2-ton that I used for my business. Top speed on the interstate I was able to accomplish was about 65. It didn't like it and was a little uncomfortable. 60 was alright. 58 was good. 55 was great. I would routinely put 10,000 pounds on the back and run across town for deliveries. Largest load was 12,500. Mostly stock. refreshed 235 engine. Updated electrical system. Disc brakes on the front with a dual circuit master. Stock exhaust manifold with 2 1/4" exhaust pipe.
Keep it how it is. Get some good tires and tubes on it. 7.5 in the front. Maybe 8.25 in the rear, but 7.5 might be a better option with the 216 to give you a little bit more torque for those heavier loads.
