I inherited a rebuilt engine with the same problem where the owner gave up on it. He also removed the timing gear which allows the cam to hold valves open causing the piston to hit the valve. I would remove the rocker shafts before trying to turn it with a big pry bar. His original problem was that it was way out of time.
