The crush sleeve sits between the pinion bearings (inside). To remove it you would need to remove the front pinion bearing and pull it out with needle-nosed pliers. Sorry you got things mixed up. We'll hope for the best. I've seen pinion nuts pretty loose myself. I think it comes from general wear and age. You'll probably be ok.
