The muffler Carl is talking about was used OEM on mid-1970's Cadillacs with 472 or 500 cubic inch engines. It has 2 1/2" pipes in and out, and using two of them in an exhaust system for a relatively small engine like a 350 gives virtually no back pressure and a pretty quiet sound. I built up a 318 Dodge engine for my son's pickup several years ago for just the sound you're looking for- - - - -quiet cruising and just a little bit of bark on hard acceleration.
