A 350 does out-torque a 292- - - - -BUT- - - - -it does so at around 400 RPM higher than the 292. The 292 has over 1/2" longer stroke than a 350 so it will be able to lug down and pull better over a wider RPM range than the 350 without downshifting. If the 350 isn't pulling well, your engine builder is probably to blame. Go look in the mirror and fuss at yourself!
