Well, the defroster problem is solved. Turns out it had nothing to do with the flap, or the control arm or any of that.
While I was working on it this evening, I pulled off the inner windshield trim piece, and got defrost air! Apparently the new windshield rubber is thicker than the old and was blocking the flow of air. So I removed the thin strip of metal that goes against the rubber by the defroster vent, bent the vent part out a little more to gain clearance between the rubber, put it back together and the defroster worked!
So now I get to reassemble everything I took apart, although at least I took the opportunity to put hose clamps on all of the hoses, so nothing is going to come loose.

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again.
