The carburetor is the part that's most affected by dirty fuel, so it should be logical to put as fine a strainer as possible as close to the carb as possible. They're butt-ugly and not period-correct, but the metal canister inline filters about 2" in diameter do the best job of cleaning up the gas. The little clear plastic ones about an inch in diameter are virtually worthless. The glass bowl filters with the ceramic filter element in them are period-correct, and they do a pretty good job of keeping the fuel clean. Just don't over-tighten the clamp nut and distort the bowl gasket and/or crack the glass.
