Since the engine has an issue, I would suggest checking clearance cold. It should be above the specified clearance by at least 0.003" when cold. At-temp clearances will tighten up, so if you have around the spec clearance, you probably don't have a valve staying open, so can do the compression test at that point. Final adjust should be done hot, of course, but let's get the engine running on all cylinders first.
