Original bedwood was southern yellow pine - painted with a heavy black product. That is if you want to keep it to what is close to the original look as possible. Changing some of the friction and wear parts won’t hurt the value - such as shackles and kingpins (if they even need replacing), motor rebuilding, repair of u joints, ball bearing replacement assemblies, etc.
