Well, okay. This is going to be a long message.
The 427 I'm running in my 68 Corvette might work for you if you have steep enough gears. But it's more on the race side of things. With a few differences, such as a lower compression ratio (10.5:1) on aluminum heads, so that you can use premium pump gas. It's a solid roller though, but it'll make great midrange torque and will be very powerful up to about 6700 rpm. With steep gearing (at least 3.70), your truck will put the hurt on most hot street cars on the road. It's a hotrod cam, definitely street/strip, and with a dual plane manifold, you would see 504 lb-ft @ 2000 rpm, peaking at 4500 rpm with 571 lb-ft, and it should make about 561 hp at 6000 rpm. The cam is a Crane #138551 with 238/246 degrees @ 0.050" and .595"/.615" lift, int/exh. Idle is a bit lumpy, and it's powerband is advertised to be 3000-6800 (but the intake limits you to 6700).
This motor would require 500 mile valve adjustments, and it is a roller cam. The heads I'd recommend are Edelbrock oval port aluminum BBC heads, and the intake would be an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap. Use full length headers, probably 2 1/8" primary tubes, such as a Hooker Supercomp header. Take your pick on performance mufflers, but your best street/strip compromise would probably be no less than 3" exhaust. Flowmaster is a favorite of mine. Nice sound, great performance.
You can get a "maintenance free" hydraulic roller cam if you don't want the frequent valve adjustments. Power will be comparable, but a few hundred rpm less. For a truck, I'd recommend something like a Crane #138551 hydraulic roller. Powerband is 2000 to 5500 rpm with valve float at 6500. THIS THING MAKES TORQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(214/222 degrees @ 0.050, .553"/.576" lift)
With 10.5:1 compression, you start OFF making 578 lb-ft at 2000 rpm, and it's perfectly flat, peaking out at 583 lb-ft at only 3000 rpm. Your horsepower is 485 at 5000, but with this cam, you will still have a GREAT towing truck and you'll never know it's under 500 hp (albiet just barely). It'll be SO POWERFUL, you'll love this motor. It would be my choice for a hotrod truck with a true towing/street/strip package.
If you want a little more strip talent, but still be a decent towing and street cam, my next recommendation would be a Crane hydraulic roller #139731 which is 226/234 deg @ 0.050" with .587"/.610" lift, int/exh. It starts out making 544 lb-ft which is still excellent, but has more of a rise in torque with rpm. It'll peak out at 579 lb-ft at 3500 and 4000 rpm, and has a slightly higher power peak of 531 hp @ 5500 rpm. This may be more to your liking. And you'll still destroy Mustangs off the line, but continue to destroy them down the road too!
Sorry about the long message, but I profiled 3 different cams for you using Dyno 2000.
Hope you're using a good strong Dana 60 or something like that in the rear! Anything less, and this motor might grenade it.
