The 1950 manual provides a warning about heating steel drop forged parts such as axles. the manual says that under no circumstances should heat be applied. Heat will weaken the material. It mentions this for straightening bent axles. “Always straighten forgings cold.” Heating to help penetrate Kroil into the pins doesn’t seem as extreme as heating to bend and straighten.
