Mine has a spring from the clevis pin and hooks to the splash pan close to where the spring for the clutch pedal is. There isn't an eye on my pedal as shown in the picture that John posted. The clevis pin is a little bit long, just enough to hook the spring to. The spring has a piece of heavy wire hooked to it as an extension.
I think you should have some kind of return spring just to make sure that you aren't dragging your brakes. In some cases just the weight of the pedal can cause the brakes to drag just a bit. Better safe than sorry.
