John,ive got an original 1942 shop manual.I checked again in section 5,hydraulic brake repair, and can find no mention of a return spring.I even looked at mine again and there is no external spring or any place i can see where one should be.The cluch pedal has a hook on it for a spring but not the brake pedal.Mine returns freely and strong all the way up.
