TooMany2count, Thank you for the link. I had gone back and read several articles on chromates leaching into the solution. I studied chemistry years ago and am well aware of the danger of exposure to even small amounts of common chemicals. I have already disposed of the SS hardware cloth, and this morning I welded a grid of rebar to fit the tank. I won't be using stainless steel again.
