The GM HEI coil is current limited to 5.5 A. The duration of the load is 3 milliseconds average. The ACCEL and others are 7.5 A current limited. I don't doubt that your switch failed. If you are sure it was not the starter, please advise how a relay is wired to protect an ignition switch from an HEI.
Is the idea to turn on the ignition, which turns on the relay, which turns on the HEI?
