Remove the tach wire from the distributor. If there is a short to ground of that wire somewhere between the distributor and the tachometer, it will shut the engine off. If that short is intermittent, it will happen a random times.
Some folks have actually used that terminal of the HEI distributor for a theft proof cut off switch. Grounding the Tach terminal will prevent the engine from starting.
