The PO of my truck had also installed the clutch disc in backwards, it had ground the heads of the fly wheel bolts to where it was difficult to remove them. The protruded portion of the clutch disc points towards the pressure plate not the flywheel and should be clearly marked. Sounds like the pressure plate is out of spec. I would replace everything if it were me. Improperly installed parts that have been sitting assembled together for all those years need to be thrown away. IMHO.
