Depending on which engine he is running, he may not want to go more than 3.55. We just replaced my rear end and went from 4.11 to 3.55 so I could run highway speeds. At 3.55, my 216 struggles on starting up hills and I lost a lot of torque. However, I can go 70 mph on the interstate at less than 3k rpms.
We need to know which engine to assist him correctly. I would hate for him to go to 3.07 if his engine doesn’t have the power to move the truck. His tire size will also play s roll in this.
Bucktruck, if you change your rear gears, you should also do your axle seals and all. It will probably cost you about 1,000 to 1200. I recommend finding someone who has already done this and is moving to an open drive line. That is how I got mine for $600, they helped install, trustworthy Stovebolt member who had 500 miles on it, and no issues.
