Tell him to put his 6v starter back in and enjoy having starter that turns over at a decent rate.... there is no problem using the 6v starter with a 12v system. good 12v flywheel/ring gears are getting hard to find. You can also heat the ring gear and flip it around if one side is worn (but that won't fix it if there are missing teeth on the ring gear)
